AGP is probably what you would call the interim architecture between PCI and PCIe. The PCI spec called for a 33 MHz bus which was very fast (plenty fast) for what it was designed for: a Peripheral Component Interconnect —think modems, sound cards, NIC boards, even the venerable PCI SSD.
